How I Maximize my Work Productivity
Being productive when you sit down to do work, regardless of what it is, is crucial to success. If you are like me (and many others), you will know how distracting work can be if your job involves being on the computer with nobody else to supervise you. The pull of funny cat videos on YouTube is strong, and it can be incredibly difficult to dive down the rabbit hole, even if you tell yourself it will only be for five minutes.
When I first started my career online, this was a major roadblock of mine, and it took me awhile to identify and overcome it.
I realized that I wasn’t being as productive as I could be, and set out on a quest to identify my time wasting habits and solve the issue. In this post, I will discuss exactly how I did it, and hopefully give you some actionable tips to help you do the same.
Identifying Time Wasting Habits
According to a study by Forbes, 61% of employees admit to wasting between 30 minutes to an hour each work day. While this may not seem like a lot at first, just 30 minutes a day adds up to about 130 hours per year spent not growing your business. This is a lot of time spent doing things that are not contributing to productive business outcomes, and can easily be cut down if you decide that is something you want to do. The first step to this process is identifying what you waste your time on. Matt Diggity did a great article on just this topic, so I won’t go into it here, but this is the first and most important step of the whole process. Once you have identified your time wasters, it is time to move on to correcting them.
Espresso…Lots of Espresso

For me personally, the allure of reading the news and scrolling through Facebook led to a whopping 5 hours per week completely wasted. Once I had established this fact, I had to figure out why I was spending so much time wandering the never-ending depths of the internet. What it came down to was focus. I found that when I had a cup of espresso, I would become laser focused on the task at hand, and could go hours without even thinking about my distractions. Once I figured this out, I immediately found an espresso machine review site, picked a product that looked good, and had it in my office within the week. Now, spending $500 on a top of the line espresso machine may seem like a waste of money, but if it helped me gain those 5 hours per week back, it was well worth the investment and paid itself off within the first week. If you are like me, here is the one I ended up getting and the site I used: Your Best Espresso Reviews – BES870XL.
Keeping up with Sleep
If you follow any of the big online marketing gurus, you will probably have heard that you should work as much as possible, through the night, then early the next morning and into the night again. This is a great sentiment and can be incredibly motivational, but the fact is that your brain uses the time you are asleep to recharge (and so does the rest of your body). Now, there are studies that say 8 and a half hours is ideal, but according to this piece of research, you really need about 6 and a half hours to hit your maximum productivity the next day. This is something I ignored for a long time, and the effects of 3 hours per night quickly began to take their toll. Bottom line – get enough sleep.
Work-Life Balance
In todays entrepreneurial culture, we come to idolize CEO’s like Elon Musk who, against all odds, came from nothing to something. This dream is shared by millions of aspiring entrepreneurs across the world, but what is not immediately apparent to those on the outside is the immense psychological and emotional toll the grind can have on a person. The fact is, depression is incredibly common among entrepreneurs, so much so that many have lost everything in the pursuit of their dreams. Finding the balance between your work and your life is crucial and, admittedly, this is something I still struggle with today. There are times when I find myself still working through the weekend, staying up until 5am and waking up at 8am to do it all over. In my mind, I know that the balance is important, but sometimes it is easy to lose sight of that when there is still so much to achieve.
Conclusion
This post may be a little off topic from the usual online moneymaking things we put up on this blog, but I think it is important to bring awareness to the fact that greatness does not come overnight (hell, I haven’t even come close to getting to where I want to be), and it is important to keep things in perspective as you grind.
